Blood Oranges are in season!

Is there anything more beautiful than a blood orange?

Gorgeous orange shot through with crimson and burgundy.

Sweet tart and only available for a short season, they are one of winters true delights.

The distinctive dark flesh color is due to the presence of anthocyanins, a family of antioxidants common to many flowers and fruit, but uncommon in citrus fruits. The flesh develops its characteristic maroon color when the fruit develops with low temperatures during the night. Sometimes there is dark coloring on the exterior of the rind as well, depending on the variety of blood orange. The skin can be tougher and harder to peel than that of other oranges.

Blood oranges are beautiful carmelized over rich vanilla ice cream, used in savory sauces, highlighted in cocktails like our Blood Orange Tequila Cocktail. Yummy.

Try your hand inventing a recipe featuring these seasonal beauties!
